“I just feel like I’m constantly juggling work and family, and there’s never enough time in the day. By the time I get home, I’m exhausted, but there’s still so much to do.”

“I feel so guilty whenever I have to leave the kids to go to work. I want to be there for every little moment, but I also love my job. It’s hard not to feel like I’m failing at both.”

“It’s been so long since I’ve had time just for me. I can’t even remember the last time I got a full night’s sleep or just sat down with a good book.”

“I sometimes worry that my colleagues think I’m less committed because I have to leave early for the kids. I’m just as dedicated, but it’s tough balancing everything.”

We have heard this from hundreds of friends, colleagues, clients and family members over the years. We have even said many of these things ourselves!

It’s a working mother’s dilemma: the challenge of balancing professional aspirations with family responsibilities. On one hand, you want to advance your career and contribute financially to your household. On the other hand, you want to be present and nurture your children. You also have household duties to manage, and you are often the go-to person for emotional support.

These competing demands on your time, energy, and resources, as well as the pressure to excel in both arenas can be overwhelming. Before you know it, you feel guilty, stressed and inadequate, torn between two versions of who you want to be.

We try to solve this dilemma by creating balance, or compromising a part of ourselves, our relationships or our careers. We are often forced to make difficult decisions about where to spend our time and attention. And the cognitive, emotional and physical load of this juggling act is exhausting.

We start questioning our abilities and grappling with self-doubt as we strive to meet the high expectations set by ourselves and society. Guilt, lack of support and depletion can suck the joy out of parenting and working. We try to be swans – looking calm, serene, in control and perfect on the surface, while we frantically kick below the surface to keep on swimming.

Solving this dilemma at a broader systemic level requires structural changes at work and home, as well as societal shifts in perceptions of gender roles and parental responsibilities. The reality, however, is that we need to do something about this NOW. Before we burn out completely and can’t get out of bed.

Learning Objectives:

In this workshop you will learn how to apply our Thrive Equation so that you can:
